10 Questions to Answer Before Automating a Process

  1. What is the target cycle time?
  2. What volume needs to run through the process?
  3. How much variation exists in the parts, products or containers?
  4. Which manual steps are involved today?
  5. What are the quality requirements?
  6. Are there safety considerations for operators or the automated system?
  7. How much floor space is available?
  8. What utilities are available (power, air, water, network)?
  9. What does this need to integrate with — upstream and downstream equipment, ERP, MES?
  10. What are the budget and ROI goals?

Answering these before requesting quotes makes it much easier to compare approaches — and to get an accurate scope back.
